I recently joined Marc Cervantes, founder and CEO of Q-Branch, for a conversation on The Texas Embassy Podcast.
We covered a lot of ground, including leadership, networking, the growth of Austin’s technology community, and why collaboration across Texas matters more than competition between cities.
One of the central themes of our conversation was a belief I have repeated for years: real leaders show up.
They attend the events. They participate in the conversations. They introduce people who should know one another. They contribute to the communities where they live and work.
Austin did not become one of the country’s leading technology hubs because of one company, one organization, or one moment. It happened because people invested in relationships, shared ideas, helped one another, and continued building through multiple economic cycles.
Marc and I also talked about the importance of storytelling in leadership and business. Facts and data matter, but stories help people understand why the work matters. They create trust, make ideas memorable, and give people a reason to become part of something bigger.
The conversation became personal when I shared the story of my daughter’s medical journey and the relationships that helped our family navigate an incredibly difficult period. It was another reminder that the people in our lives are not simply part of our professional networks. Sometimes those relationships become the support system that changes everything.
We also explored what human connection means in the age of artificial intelligence. Technology will continue to improve, and AI will reshape nearly every industry. But the ability to build trust, collaborate, communicate, and create meaningful relationships will remain a competitive advantage.
All opportunities come from people.
I appreciated the opportunity to sit down with Marc and take part in a thoughtful conversation about the future of Austin, Texas, technology, and leadership.
