Why I Built the “Lawyer Level Up” Newsletter

Business development for lawyers is not a talent you are born with. It is a skill you build, and most attorneys never build it because nobody ever made them practice. I spent five years running marketing and business development inside two Am Law 100 firms in Austin and Dallas. I watched brilliant technical lawyers lose work to attorneys they privately considered “not as good.” The difference was never the law. It was visibility, relationships, and the discipline to do the work when no case was on fire.

That gap is exactly why I launched Lawyer Level Up, a free newsletter about business development for lawyers who are done waiting for the phone to ring.

What “Lawyer Level Up” Actually Is

Lawyer Level Up is a newsletter for attorneys who want to grow a book of business without pretending to be someone they are not. No gimmicks. No “10 hacks to go viral on LinkedIn.” Just the practical, unglamorous mechanics of client development that I have taught to hundreds of lawyers over two decades as a law firm speaker and business development coach for lawyers.

I am not a lawyer, and that is the point. You do not need another JD telling you to “write more blog posts and go to more events.” You need someone who has sat on the business side of the firm, seen what wins work and what wastes time, and can hand you a system you will actually use.

Why Business Development for Lawyers Cannot Wait

Every attorney eventually learns the same hard lesson. Assuming the firm will keep your calendar full is not a career plan. It is a bet on other people. When the current matters close and the pipeline is empty, “I was too busy for business development” is a very expensive excuse.

The lawyers who consistently bring in clients are rarely the smartest in the room. They are the ones who stay findable. They show up where referral sources and prospects are paying attention. They ask their best clients a simple question, “Who else should I be talking to?”, and then they follow up. That is business development for lawyers stripped to its core: visibility plus follow through, repeated on purpose.

Lawyer Level Up exists to make that repetition easier, one short, useful email at a time.

What You Get Inside the Newsletter

Every issue is built to be read in a few minutes and applied the same week. Recurring themes include:

  • Client development for lawyers who “hate selling.” How to grow a practice without turning into someone you do not respect.
  • Networking and reputation. Building relationships that outlast any single transaction, the real engine behind every rainmaker.
  • Referral strategy. Turning satisfied clients and fellow attorneys into a steady source of introductions.
  • Visibility that fits your personality. LinkedIn, speaking, writing, community boards. You do not have to do all of it. You have to do the right ones for you.
  • Law firm culture. How firms move business development out of a committee and into the DNA of every attorney.

If you want the deeper version of these ideas, I lay out the full argument in my post on business development for lawyers and in what I do for lawyers and law firms.

Who Should Subscribe

Lawyer Level Up is written for the attorney who is ready to take control instead of waiting:

  • Senior associates who see partnership ahead and know technical skill alone will not get them there.
  • New partners stepping out of the shadows and expected to bring in their own work.
  • Solo and small firm attorneys who are the whole marketing department, whether they like it or not.
  • Firm leaders who want a culture where client development is everyone’s job, not a burden carried by a rainmaking few.

Introvert or extrovert, it does not matter. Business development for lawyers is not about being the loudest person at the bar association mixer. It is about being intentional, being consistent, and being human.

Business Development Is a Learned Skill, So Start Learning

There is a stubborn myth that great rainmakers are simply born that way. It is nonsense. Some people have a head start, sure. But for the vast majority of attorneys, client development is a learnable skill, much like mastering a new practice area. It takes focus, reps, and a little structure. The payoff compounds for years, which is exactly why the worst time to start is “later.”

You cannot delegate your network. You cannot outsource your reputation. But you can get the tools, the ideas, and the nudge to move your practice forward, and that is what lands in your inbox when you subscribe to Lawyer Level Up.
