One of the best parts of my role as CEO of the Austin Technology Council is that I get to sit down regularly with tech leaders, startup founders, investors, and seasoned innovators. These are the people shaping what’s next… not just for Austin, but for industries around the world. And if there’s one consistent theme in every conversation, it’s this: things are changing fast. To thrive in the future means you have to stay curious.
AI, quantum computing, augmented reality, biotech, clean energy… pick your category. There’s not just one wave of innovation happening; it’s a tsunami of transformation coming from all directions. Everything is happening at once. Even in a major tech hub like Austin, Texas… it is hard to keep up. AI in Austin is a major topic at every meet up, but even those with tech backgrounds are still trying to figure it ou.
But here’s what I’ve noticed: most people are not keeping up.
We all know technology is evolving, yet far too many professionals, executives, and even community leaders are watching it all unfold from the sidelines. They scroll headlines, hear buzzwords, and move on. But this moment requires more. If you want to stay relevant, contribute meaningfully, and create future-proof opportunities, for yourself or your organization. you have to be engaged.
I don’t mean everyone needs to become a coder or AI expert. But we do need to ask better questions, follow smarter conversations, and build relationships with the people who are out front leading this change. That’s part of what ATC is doing… we’re creating the space for those connections to happen.
And at the same time, we need to double down on human interaction (H.I.). No matter how advanced the tools become, people still matter most. Trust, collaboration, and shared values are not going away… they’re becoming even more essential.
So here’s my challenge: Learn something new this week. Talk to someone who’s building the future. Attend an event where ideas are being explored. And when you meet someone interesting, don’t just shake hands…start a conversation.
The future of work, community, and leadership belongs to those who stay curious and stay connected.
